Dinosaur World Cake

The cake that I made was what I call a dinosaur landscape cake. I made it this past March for my oldest son’s 4th birthday.

To make the cake I used a 15×11 sheet cake pan, a 6 inch diameter round cake pan, and a small mixing bowl which was also about 6 inches in diameter. I used boxed yellow cake mix for the whole thing, two packages for the sheet cake and one more package for the round pan and the bowl, split evenly between them. For that part I simply followed the package instructions. To construct the cake I removed the sheet cake from the pan (covering the bottom of the pan in wax paper helped emensly when removing the cake) and placed it on a sheet of cardboard cut to size, then I removed the round cake from the pan and the cake from the bowl. I cut the cake from the bowl so that it fit on top of the round cake to make a small mountain.

I then iced both the sheet cake and the small mountain of cake with brown store bought icing. I then put them both in the fridge over night to harden up the icing and the cake a bit. The next morning I took out both cakes and put the small mountain cake on top of the sheet cake, towards the upper corner. I then mixed up some colored icings my mixing store bought vanilla icing with blue, green, and red food colorings. The red I put on top of the mountain and let it run down the sides for lava, the blue I put across the cake to make a river, and the green I dotted around the cake to look live plants. I then used some dollar store little plastic dinosaurs to place around the landscape, some on top of the mountain, others looking like they are at the river. In the end it turned out tasty and very cute!
