Elmo Birthday

Elmo 1st birthday cake

Elmo is sitting on a 4″ tall 12×18 sheet cake. Flavors are vanilla and chocolate with chocolate ganache filling and vanilla buttercream.
Elmo’s body is made from Almond cake baked in a wondermold pan, it sits on an additional 8″ layer. I had to carve a bit away to get the shape right.

His head is rice cereal treats molded into a football-ish shape. I stuck a plastic dowel in the head, and put the other end of the dowel in the wondermold cake.

I used another 8″ cake to make the arms and legs(picture cutting 4 strips, the two rounded edge ones I used for his arms), and used cupcake tops for the feet and hands. You’ll need lots of toothpicks/sucker sticks to get everything to stay in place.

Fur was just the grass tip, and the eyes and nose were fondant. In retrospect I would use gumpaste so it would dry lighter than the fondant.

The smash cake in front of elmo is just a 4″ cake with a red chocolate number 1 for the birthday boy 😉
