Koala Cake

This cake was made for a 10 year old who was obsessed with Koalas.
It’s was baked in 2 Wilton pans – a big bear and a small bear. The cakes were chocolate but you can use anything that is sturdy (like a pound cake).
To start decorating, you must take the smaller cake and attach it to the bigger cake. I used dowell rods in the middle of the bigger cake and then stuck the smaller cake to it.
The cake is covered in buttercream frosting that was piped on with a #16 star tip. I used a darker grey for the mother and a lighter grey for the baby koala. The koala’s fingernails are made out of fondant that is dyed black and rolled out into short sticks. These are just shoved into the buttercream icing.
The tree was styrofoam that was covered in fondant. To get the texture, I took a scissor and cut just deep enough to make a triangle (not all the way through). After that I took plastic leaves and pushed them into the top of the styrofoam.
